I don’t know if USDA Agriculture Secretary Tom Vislack was the real culprit or someone higher up but this foul-up is inexcusable. Any manager worth his pay knows better than to jump to conclusions without the facts…especially regarding personnel decisions! The fact that Obama “‘instructed his staff to learn from this circumstance” does not speak highly of the quality of his staff. Someone should be fired or demoted for this and it’s not Shirley Sherrod.

Vislack they say jumped the gun
But the damage to Sherrod is done.
Apologies aside
It’s time to decide
If his tenure as leader’s undone.

Goldman Sachs Are The New Untouchables

So much for the much touted lawsuit against Goldman Sachs for questionable trading practices. These guys really do run the country. A few phone calls, some gentle public flogging, backdoor meetings and voila! A meager fine (based on what they earn) that changes nothing! You might as well close down the SEC. They are completely and utterly useless.

So Goldman gets away with a fine
And the SEC loses its spine.
Its more of the same,
They’re useless and lame
With no bite and a bark that’s benign.

I Could be a Republican if I just Stop Thinking

Republicans are constantly proposing ‘magical’ ideas to solving our problems vs. more adult solutions. Things like: America is never wrong; you can defeat terrorism with the Army; lower taxes will somehow fix the deficit. It’s almost as if they avoid thinking. It’s easier to grab onto a phrase or colloquialism and apply it whenever the going gets tough. The real problem is their blatant self-interest. Their whole agenda revolves around keeping what they got by maintaining the status quo. Not a good prescription for progress.

Here’s a canny idea so bold
I’m hoping it starts to take hold.
GOP candidates
Must submit their birth dates
To prove that they’re not eight years old.

Arizona Trys to Wield its Power

Arizona keeps getting heat for their misguided attempt to address their immigration issues. It’s typical of how conservatives try to solve complex problems with sticks and stones. Now the Arizona brain-trust has trotted out some useless commissioner to threaten LA by withholding Arizona generated electricity. It’s fun watching this play out. Stupid is as stupid does.

Arizonans are starting to foam
At the degree of distaste for their tome
On immigration law,
Which says to us all
There are lights on but no one is home.

This guy Blumenthal is a real piece of work. Lying about serving in Vietnam when he did his best to avoid it! There are too many like him in Congress who dodged the war in their youth only to wave the flag and send other parents kids into battle in Iraq. These kind of people disgust me. If you live in Connecticut please do us all a favor and send this guy packing.

Oil Executives Play Dumb and Dumber

The Oil company executives in front of Congress sounded just the Bankers a couple of months ago. It’s never anybody’s fault and they don’t know what happened. Of course, when things are going well they take all the credit and award themselves bonuses. Not a single one of these people deserves to be called a leader. They’re just over paid administrators. In an effort to help streamline these congressional inquiries, I’ve created a limerick that can be recited in response to any and all questions. I’m sure Congress will thank me later.

I’ll admit there’s a function that we
Must have played in the mess that you see.
Though I don’t know the cause
There must have been flaws.
What I do know is it wasn’t me!

EU Gets Behind Greece

The EU keeps working on a plan to ‘rescue’ Greece but their credibility is getting strained. The bottom line is that no country wants to bail out the Greeks who they perceive as abusing their EU membership. They lied to get in and have loaded up on debt with generous pensions and assorted government subsidies. Eventually the ’shit will hit the fan’ as the cultures are just to disparate and the monies to large. It hasn’t happened yet but the shit’s still warm and the fan is still spinning.

The EU keeps working to bail
The Greeks from their debt-induced jail.
But their actions bespeak
They’re all talking Greek,
Which implies there’s a hole in their pail.

Obama Bashes Bankers…Again

Obama gave a tongue lashing to our countries biggest bankers…again. He’s got to keep the pressure on. These guys are dyed-in-the-wool capitalists who will “sell you the rope to hang them with”. Government is our only protection against these behemoths. Free market concepts fail when a market is controlled by a handful of large companies. Checks and balances are needed. Ignorant conservatives call this socialism but they’re just being alarmist (as always). Unfettered capitalism is like a kid in a candy store…it’s all well and good until he pukes in your car!

There once was a Prez named Obama
Whose speeches were laden with drama.
But the bankers he’d poke
Were curmudgeonly folk
Whose response was a collective yo’ mama.

Wrong Religion in the Wrong Place

Seems every time I read the news, there is another politician trying to inject their particular religious views into the administration of the government. This time it’s trying to protect Coptic Christian women in Egypt from spousal abuse at the hands of Muslim men. Now I don’t condone spousal abuse in any way, shape or form but this is not an issue for our elected representatives. Is it our job now to protect every women on the planet from abusive husbands …or just Christian women? Sometimes the Lord has to step up and do his own work.

It’s a shame that even though blessed
Some Christians are getting distressed.
Though Reps may cajole
For expanding our role,
It’s to God they should take their request.

Moving on to the Subprime Blame Game

A U.S. Congressional panel has started it’s inquiry into the subprime debacle and the litany of players at it’s core. Of course, they were all innocent of any wrongdoing or fraud. That’s because it’s safer to plead ignorance. Admit to any culpability and the lawyers will descend like a pack of wild dogs. Which is how it needs to be. The courts can’t do anything about ignorance, hubris or greed but the lawyers usually find a way to extract a pound of flesh.

For those who set sub-prime aflame
Their claim of ‘not me’ is just lame.
So let’s give ‘em Bronx cheers
As truth disappears
While squirming to deflect the blame.
