Stephen Hawking says aliens that visit earth might be too dangerous to interact with humans. Advanced lifeforms could be looking to conquer or colonize as opposed to something more beneficial. You’ll recall when Columbus discovered the new world it didn’t turn out well for the native Indians. On the other hand, when they see how well we embrace new cultures, maybe they’ll seek to join us and build a new future together. I think it all depends on where they land.
The spaceship lit by it’s corona
Suggested a foreign persona.
So do we embrace
This alien race?
Or direct them towards Arizona.

The Tea Party movement is a non-starter. Perfect for someone like Sarah Palin who seeks press regardless of its relevance. It seems optimized for the 50’s and 60’s crowd who like to protest in lawn chairs. How the radicals have changed! Their new platform is free Viagra for all and discounts on Avodart and Boniva.
Does the Tea Party movement matter
Or is it a lot more chatter?
With Palin out front
It’s more of a stunt,
With her as the role of Mad Hatter.

This is like a dream come true for a kid. Discovering a fossil that’s two million years old! It’s ironic that a 9 year old discovered the fossil of another 9 year old (approximately). You have to appreciate the patience and dedication it takes to do this kind of work. Painstakingly digging and brushing and more digging and more brushing. Then along comes a kid who stumbles onto the big one. C’est la vie.
The boy had glanced over his shoulder
Then saw it just under the boulder.
A fossilized bone
Same size as his own,
But it was two million years older.

The weekend news was filled with stories about Apple’s iPad debut or the Pope on the ropes. Both were mildly entertaining although similarly redundant. Seldom was heard a discouraging word about either the iPad or the Pope. It was a time to bring out the faithful and revel in radiant joy! I have to give the upper hand to the Apple, however, for their decorous behavior. The only thing they will molest is your wallet.
The Apple faithful just love their new toys,
You can tell from their pandering noise.
With devotees prodigious
It’s almost religious.
At least they’re not abusing young boys.

I’ve never been one of the Apple minions. My biggest problem is they lock you into their devices and their stores. I don’t like being a captive. So here we have another visionary, game changing device. Maybe…maybe not. I just don’t buy into the idea that we need access to news, video and music whatever we do and wherever we go. Maybe it’s the whole attention deficit thing. What I do see is a company out to lighten your wallet with hype and buzz. It’s marketing on steroids.
Finally, you can get the iPad
And see if the real thing will add
A different perspective
Than the Apple collective.
Is it fruitful or just an iFad?

I always like these engineering type contests. This video is about building a Rube Goldberg contraption to dispense hand lotion. You could make a case they’re an apt metaphor for how things get done in the real world. Give a large organization or government department a simple objective and watch it wind it’s way through all the various layers, process and bureaucracy to see what comes out the other end. Often times the end product is unrecognizable, but sometimes it actually works as planned!
Events can be more than they seem
The trick is to find what they mean.
Though easy to doubt
Sometimes they work out
Like a ball in Rube Goldberg’s machine.

I can now sleep more soundly knowing the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has got all the bases covered. Their operations manual contains a section on how to search a service monkey. You can read here what a service monkey is (I didn’t know either!). They’ll even go so far as to strip off the monkey’s diaper…and we complain about taking off our shoes! It’s hard to imagine a terrorist trying to blend in carrying a monkey on a plane, but if they try, we’re ready!
You wouldn’t think that they’d make such a fuss
But the TSA views this a plus.
If a terrorist tries
For a diaper disguise,
They’ll not make a monkey out of us.

There’s a scandal brewing (again) in the Catholic church regarding the sexual abuse of young boys by the priesthood. You would have thought they cleaned this up after the scandals in the USA. Nope. Now all of Europe is engulfed in the same crap. So what does the church do? Nothing…again! The Pope’s response is to send a ‘pastoral’ letter. Are you kidding me? A letter? They’re ether clueless or arrogant or both. Thank God I’m not Catholic.
You would think that the priests would know better
Or the Bishops in charge they would fetter,
The use of young boys
As sexual toys,
Now the Pope will fix all with a letter.

The genesis of rising food prices may start with the seeds. Monsanto is using their market dominance to drive up seed prices. Farmers used to pay just for the seeds but now they must ‘license’ the genes in Monsanto’s genetic soybeans. Sometimes there’s even an add-on ‘technology’ fee. What starts as competition turns to exploitation when the big guys squeeze out the little guys. I’m trying hard to remain a good Capitalist but it keeps getting harder every day.
The farmers are starting to shout,
At Monsanto’s misuse of their clout.
The company refutes
But legal disputes
Are starting to plant seeds of doubt.

I’m not sure what to make of the Bloom Box as seen on 60 Minutes. It looks like a great idea although I’m not expert enough to tell otherwise. The experts quoted above were unanimously unimpressed. The technology’s not new and significant cost barriers still exist which is why it will take 5-10 years before we ever see one for the home. So why all the hype now? Either I’m missing something or maybe they’re just looking for more money.
The buzz for their fuel cell is booming
With hope for clean energy looming.
But five to ten years
Before it appears?
This box is a long way from blooming.

This homeowner decided to bulldoze his house rather than lose it to the bank in foreclosure. He wants to ’send a message’ to the bank but he’s missing the point. The bank doesn’t want the house, they want the money the house will bring. Now he’ll have the bank AND the insurance company after him. If he can avoid paying them via bankruptcy then maybe this will work in his favor but I have my doubts. Now he’s going to have to bulldoze the legal system. Good luck with that!
While he might think the banker’s a louse
And his complaints a legitimate grouse,
To bulldoze is dramatic
But anti-climatic.
It’s money they want, not the house.

The Shuttle Endeavour comes in for a night landing that is too cool for words. While the program has been expensive, it has reshaped space travel. I understand the need to move forward but the replacement program was tied into future moon visits so now we’re ready to retire the Shuttles with no replacement in site. Typical government bureaucracy. It’s amazing sometimes how anything gets done at all.
The Shuttles are way past their youth
And now getting long in the tooth.
As budget cuts mauled
Replacements got stalled.
‘Ghostly’ is too close to the truth.

The school administrators in Philadelphia that used webcams in their laptops to ‘prevent theft’ need to have their collective heads examined. Am I to believe that nobody thought remotely activating a camera in the students home was a breach of privacy? This is a sad statement on the quality of our educators. The FBI and the courts are now going to be passing out the grades and the school district looks to earn a big, fat ‘F’.
Their statement portrayed them as trying
To safeguard their laptops, not spying.
But accusing a student
Was not very prudent,
As it turns out the school had been lying.

I didn’t get a chance last week to talk about these yahoos (not the search engine!). With the discussions of health care costs at the forefront of everyone’s mind, Anthem Bluecross (owned by Wellpoint) decides to raise rates by 40%. If they did it on purpose, it’s astounding the balls they have. It’s like a big FU to the whole country. I’m generally not a fan of big government but I’m less a fan of big business. Who else can protect the little guy from the avarice of these large corporations?
At Wellpoint it’s all about growth
With a leader who must be an oaf.
Health Care’s at the fore
And he plays the whore.
Is he greedy or clueless or both?

Serves him right! Marrying a women he’s never seen because of those ridiculous head-to-toe garments. I wonder how many other Muslim men are surprised on their wedding night. She wore a niqab. The only opening was slits for her eyes. Who knows what lurks under there. Warts, weight, a tail…a penis! Transvestites could have a field day over there.
By all looks she was kind and appeared
A Muslim young women who neared,
Her wedding night bed
‘Til the veil on her head,
Was removed and uncovered her beard.

Out on the town............Home reading the Koran
