Ill Health

The Health Care reform bill keeps moving toward passage in Congress. I generally support the bill in order to protect the consumer from the questionable practices of insurance companies. The problem with insurance of any kind is that, by the time you find out a company has screwed you, it’s too late to do anything about it. We need the government to protect the little guy. That said, I never trust our elected representatives to pass anything this big that does not raise taxes in the long run. Looks like we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

The progress on health care is steady
Though the costs are still rather heady.
When finally it passes
I fear for my taxes.
I’m feeling a bit sicker already.

Bay Bridge is Falling Down

Pieces of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco were falling on commuters the other day as high winds caused some prior repair work to fail. That has to put a damper on your commute when a large chunk of ‘bridge’ crashes into your windshield. It’s lucky no one got hurt. I’d love to hear what the guy told the rental car company.

A Bay Bridge piece fell accidental.
The damage it caused detrimental.
The front end was smashed
As it fell with a crash.
Thank goodness the car was a rental.

The Perennial Fall Classic

The World Series kicks off tonight with game one. I’m not a rabid baseball fan because the season is just too long but the playoffs and World Series can produce some great games and real drama. I’m looking forward to a good match up going all the way to game seven. I’m hoping the weather does not become a factor but if it does, I’ll just throw another log on the fire.

With the World Series set to enthrall,
The weather is most certainly Fall.
For all of the fans
Who sit in the stands
It’s always the coldest baseball.

Why did those Northwest pilots overshoot their destination? The latest explanation/excuse is “they were distracted by looking at their laptops”. That sounds as lame as the “we were having a discussion” excuse. How could they miss all the alarms and communication from flight controllers? There are only two possible explanations:  1 – they were asleep  2 – they were…..

Their excuses are getting quite worn
And viewed with derision and scorn.
The pilots won’t say
What led them astray
But I think they were surfing for porn.

The Reality of Rio

Whoa! Drug wars in Rio…and we’re going to hold the Olympics there? I rarely hear anything good about that city except for Carnaval and the hot girls on the beaches. Crime, slums and poverty. That’s pretty much the picture in my head.  I just don’t see the attraction in visiting these third world countries. If I want a huge party I’ll go down to Mardi Gras. As for the beaches…well… I’ll just have to settle for the ‘Girls Gone Wild’ dvd.

My picture of Rio’s not pretty.
A crowed and crime-ridden city.
Gang wars affirm
There’s reason to squirm
Inside the Olympic Committee.

Nipples on Display

Here’s something lighter for a Friday. A display in Sacramento,CA of costumes worn in various Hollywood movies. Some of these were made with whatever they found lying around e.g. Darth Vader’s headgear was an old German WWII helmet and a gas mask. Funny…that’s exactly what it looked like. I’ll bet the studio wardrobe departments could make a fortune renting their stuff out for Halloween.

Though some are concerned it could cripple,
Her star power can often be tripled.
Just show us some skin.
And what about him?
Even Batman has shown us some nipple.

Religious Rumble

The Catholic church is moving in on Anglican turf. Let’s get ready to rumble! Knives, brass knuckles, chains? Nah…they’re to civilized for that. How about a dancing fight like the Jets or the Sharks? Nah…they’re to stuffy for that. This is more like trading baseball cards. I’ll give you two bishops, a primate and four rectors for six ordinariates, a pope-on-a-rope and one ‘get out of purgatory free’ card….whatever that’s worth.

The Catholic church as we know
Can stage quite an intricate show.
Pomp and incense,
Doesn’t have to make sense
‘Cause they’re making it up as they go.

Run For Your Life

An Australian anthropologist has concluded that ancient man was in much better physical shape than we are today. Duh! Which lifestyle is more active, sitting on your butt in front of a video screen or chasing (or being chased), by various forms of four-legged wildlife? I’ll give you the answer in four years after I finish my Anthropology degree.

Early man was in much better shape,
As his lifestyle was much less sedate.
You workout everyday
When you are the prey,
And running is used to escape.

Let the Balloon Go

I wasn’t going to address the ‘balloon boy’ story because it looked, and turned out to be, to contrived. The media however, won’t let it go. I think they’re pissed off because they were suckered into a hoax story. Now they want revenge by diving into the family’s history, effect on the boy, legal issues, blah, blah, blah, ad infinitum. Their race to be first with the story has transmogrified into ‘print first and ask questions later’. This time they got stung.

The media’s job to apportion
The news, sometimes leads to contortion.
This ‘balloon boy’ mess
Still hot off the press,
Has been played way out of proportion.

Boobs on Base

I love this picture. Even the fight against breast cancer needs a little humor now and then. With pink ribbons everywhere, I think the awareness campaign is working…except in Los Angeles. The Dodgers had trouble finding second base last night losing 11-0 to Philadelphia.

For young men it’s an oft’ dreamed of place,
With memories they cannot erase.
We all can relate
So step up to the plate.
Don’t let breast cancer steal second base.

No Rush for Rams

An investor group trying to purchase the St. Louis Rams has decided to boot Rush Limbaugh from the group. I don’t know what they expected as he’s a lightening rod for controversy. That’s his job and he’s good at it. Rush thinks it’s another left wing, liberal conspiracy to destroy conservatism in America. I think they just realized he’d make a lousy ’silent’ partner.

The Los Angeles Rams are in play
But the deal may be going astray.
The group has conceded,
All that is needed
Is a Rush to get out of the way.

Get it ‘Amped’ Up

Now here’s an iPhone app I could have used years ago. ‘Amp Up Before You Score’ gives useful advice on how to pick-up girls. I particularly like the suggested pick-up lines as I never had a good collection of those, and those I had, I could never deliver with a straight face. When all else fails, a good sense of humor seems to work pretty well. Of course we always get the ‘objectifying women’ crowd every time men and sex are used in the same sentence. Here’s the deal:  yes…men do view women as sex objects…sometimes, but not always. Get over it.

The girl at the bar was so striking,
I daydreamed her dress I was hiking.
But no longer a pup
I don’t get ‘amped’ up,
Viagra is more to my liking.

A Noble Nobel Winner

This award has generated a lot of controversy since day one. While it’s true that an small, eclectic group makes these decisions, the award of a Nobel Prize still carries a lot of weight around the world. The GOP wonks are just mad they’ve never won, which in itself shows the process works.  Obama has inspired people around the world and reminded us that sometimes…sometimes…the cream still rises to the top.

The Nobel committee caused a fuss
Giving Obama the win and thus,
His Nobel Prize
Came as a surprise,
To him, as well as to us.

Somalia Pirates Turn a Blind Eye

A group of Somalia pirates got a surprise the other day when the ship they attacked, thought to be a cargo vessel, turned out to be the flagship for the French Navy! “Oops…my bad” said the pirate leader as they high-tailed it out of there but not before half of them were caught. They say the pirates are well organized but apparently not to the point of offering a vision plan.

Some Somalia pirates, thought sly,
Were caught when their attack went awry.
Their target ahead
Was French Navy instead.
Their patch must have been on the wrong eye.

Bronco Mania

You might as well know that I’m an unabashed Denver Bronco fan. I’ve been that way since I was knee high to a duck. They had their problems this summer with a new coach and a dust-up with the starting quarterback that ended in his being traded to Chicago. There was lot’s of uncertainty going into this season but winning cures all. They beat New England this weekend in overtime to go 5-0! The only complaint I have is those butt ugly ‘throwback’ uniforms. Burn those things.

The Broncos had a tough July,
New coach in…quarterback goodbye.
But five straight wins
As the season begins,
And they’re riding high in Mile High.
