‘Flash Forward’ to Trouble?

I watched a new show last week after my son raved about it.  It’s called ‘Flash Forward’ and tells the story of when everybody in the world blacked out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds at exactly the same time.  It sounds kind of hokey, but the interesting part was that during their ‘black out’, people saw a vision of their future six months from now.  Some saw a good future, some saw a bad future and one couple saw……

‘Flash Forward’ to the future of your life,
Is a vision that can cut like a knife,
If the future you see,
Does not agree
With the future as seen by your wife.

Mackenzie Phillips – How to Sell Your Book

Filed under: Entertainment, Events — @ 3:00 am

What kind of person airs their dirty laundry on Oprah? That’s easy, people selling books!  It never ceases to amaze what people will put in their books, and then try to justify the damage they’ve done as “necessary” or “needed” or “therapeutic”.  I don’t know what happened between Mackenzie Phillips and her dad, and I’ll never know as he’s not around to give his side of the story. What I do know is she’s trying to promote her book and her methods are disingenuous at best and downright slimy at worst.  The last line of my limerick pretty much says it all.

Mackenzie is waking up ghosts,
With stories that many think gross.
Impelled to tell?
Or a new book to sell.
I can’t decide who to hate most.

Detroit Finally Wins!

Monday’s always good to look back on sports over the weekend and figure out who’s really feeling the love.  Today it has to be the Detroit Lions.  They haven’t won a game since 2007!  Football is too brutal a sport to lose week in and week out.  I pity the poor team that breaks this record…if it’s ever broken.

A freshening wind did blow
As the football gods bestowed,
Detroit with a win.
How long has it been?
They lost nineteen in a row.

The LPGA Fights for Irrelevancy

The LPGA is in town this week and the source of my ire. They have enough trouble with declining sponsorship and lack of fan interest but this latest episode takes the cake.  A friend of mine has volunteered at this tournament the last few years but was informed this year that all volunteers had to pay a $75 fee. All of a sudden it’s not good enough to donate your time and effort…they want to charge you for the ‘privilege’. She told them to blow it out their ear. This organization is going nowhere fast and getting there even faster.  Good luck with that!

The LPGA is on track
To lose more of the sponsors who back,
The game and its cost.
So to cover what’s lost,
Volunteers will also get whacked.

Trump Says Hello,Goodbye to Gadhafi

Looks like Donald Trump has got himself into a little pickle. The Libyan government erected a tent on his property for Moammar to throw a little party. The tent came down as fast as it went up when it was learned that Gadhafi was the ‘tenant’. Questions are now flying about who knew what, when, how, etc. etc.  None of this will fluster the Donald.  He’s as unflappable as his hair.

The Donald’s reputation was bent
When he learned he had given consent,
For Gadhafi to stay
And throw a soiree.
A decision he’s sure to lament.

The Middle East is Hopeless

The whole Israel-Palestine issue is hopeless.  The Israeli’s have no intention of giving back anything and the Palestinians have no cards to play other than violence. We are useless as middle-men because of our unwavering support for Israel.  Our foreign policy revolves around the maxim ‘when in doubt, shoot it out’. Good thing these countries are half way around the world or it might interfere with my breakfast.

The Israeli’s move with settlements
Has their right wing flush with celebrants.
It seems status quo
Is preferred as the goal,
Else these would be seen as impediments.

Poland’s Pissed

Poor Poland. Their country is a flat expanse connecting Russia with the European continent.  A virtual thoroughfare for armies hell bent on expansion. That’s why they’re unhappy with our decision to abandon the ‘missile shield’. What can I say…comes with the territory.

Some of our allies are stunned
At the missile defense that we shunned,
But history shows
It’s mainly the Pols
Who risk being those overrun.

Google Meets Pinky and the Brain

If we give Google the rights to publish these books online, what will they do with it in the future?  Dominance breeds a desire for more, simply because they can. While Google likes to think their mantra is “First, do no evil”,  I think it’s more along the lines of Pinky and the Brain.

What Google is doing with books,
Are they altruistic or crooks?
Digital’s nice,
But what’s the price
To insure we all get to look.

New T-Rex Skeleton

Filed under: Entertainment, Events — @ 3:00 am

A new T-Rex skeleton was recently found in China. This new T-Rex was a lot smaller, with big feet and an even bigger head. The direction of evolution is both mysterious and unpredictable.

The new T-Rex had been bred
By nature to have a big head.
Whether natural selection
Or evolution’s direction,
We get Rosie O’Donnell instead.

Steve Jobs is Back

Filed under: Events, Investing — @ 10:00 am

Looks like Steve Jobs is back and finally admitting he had a liver transplant. I’m not sure they handled that properly but most of those concerns have been muted by the rising stock.  If he takes my new product advice and moves into health care, the sky’s the limit!

Steve Jobs has been known to deliver
The products that make us all quiver.
Though the iPod and iPhone
Are nothing to moan,
I can’t wait for the new iLiver.

Ghost Fleet in Singapore

The Daily Mail in the UK ran an article about a Ghost Fleet in Singapore . These are tankers and cargo vessels with nothing to ship and nowhere to go. This size of the fleet is 500+ ships and growing. I don’t care how you try to spin this,  it doesn’t bode well for the return of economic growth.

World leaders continue to pour
Hopeful exuberance galore,
But worldwide shipping
Is markedly slipping
Thus, a ‘ghost fleet’ in Singapore.

Serena’s Temper

I like it when famous people lose their cool (except politicians, they’re usually grandstanding).  It brings them back down to earth and reminds us that they’re human just like the rest of us. How they recover and reclaim their pedestal is what shows true character. Serena will be just fine.

It was hard to watch our Serena
Collapse like a concertina.
A temper cyclone
With expletives thrown,
She’ll need work on her court demeanor.

Rep. Joe Wilson Impresses

It used to be we could have real discussions and debates even though we did not agree on the issues. Health care reform has burst that bubble.  These fringe Republicans seem to have the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. As far as calling Obama a liar,  isn’t that like the pot calling the kettle black? (hee…hee…no racial slur intended).

Rep.Wilson has found a prescription
For unwanted attention to diction.
“You lie” was his call
But that applies to them all.
It’s part of their job description.

Lehman’s Anniversary

It’s amazing how little we’ve learned in the past year, be it ignorance or willful protection of self interest. I think it’s the later. Our politicians are as beholding to powerful special interests as they ever were.  Money talks and election losing politicians walk.

It’s been a year since Lehman’s collapse
With the industry avoiding relapse.
Lessons learned?
You can’t get burned
If the government fills the gaps.

Goodbye Paula

Looks like Paula Abdul is gone for good with the addition of Ellen as the fourth Idol judge. I was never a big fan early on because she seemed a little too ditzy. Recently though, she grew on me as a good counterpart to Simon’s brusqueness.  I know she’s battled some personal demons as well, so here’s a short limerick goodbye.

We’ll miss you Paula Abdul.
We early on thought you a fool,
But talk from your heart
Set you apart.
Idol lost a most sparkling jewel.
